Old School Music Fridays: Michael Jackson

I haven't done one of these in a long time...there was no way I could miss this week's theme, Michael Jackson.

When I first heard that Mike had a heart attack, I was a bit surprised but not really. I heard he was pretty frail these days, and with all the stress and pressure he's been under for the last 15 years, it would have worn down anyone, point blank...I fully expected him to recover. But then when I read he'd died, it felt like someone had socked me hard in my chest--I could not believe what I was seeing. I involuntarily began to cry.

Tho I have been side-eying Michael and his antics for quite some time, all I could remember was that my first real memory of music and dancing as a toddler was to Michael. My parents had these huge speakers in the den, the outside was made of real wood; completely old school. I remember dancing to Mike and his brothers facing those speakers, in my fuzzy bunny slippers and pajamas, my hair all wrapped up in the scarf I would sleep in to keep my hair neat and pretty--I loved that music so much! The first concert I ever went to was Mike and his brothers--I was so excited cause I got to touch Jermaine on his way by...

That's the only way I choose to remember Michael, for his music, for I believe he did the best that he knew how, and he never seemed to be able to mend his heart and overcome his issues and demons like say...Prince. I would have loved for him to enjoy what appears to be the peaceful, lavish, respected life Prince has, but I am also glad his pain is at rest.

Me being me, here is a mini-movie video that Mike made back in the day, with icons Eddie Murphy, Iman, and Magic Johnson. It is a fantastic tribute in my eyes to the beauty of Blackness, and I was very proud of Michael when he made it. Enjoy and have a blessed day:

I'm with you. I just want the fond memories of MJ right now. Was so sick to see that within minutes of hearing his death announced they were broadcasting the court proceedings on TV. Really!? Respect, people!

Remember the Time. Great song, great video, Great way to remember the man.

I have never seen that photo with young Michael and Ed Sullivan. Thanks for sharing it. More importantly, thanks for sharing your personal memories of Michael. He did have remarkable stress in his life. Like you, I know he is at peace now. I hope he found some measure of peace before his heart gave out as well...

peace, Villager

It was that surprising to me either, I mean I saw the pictures, and they were disturbing. I knew it was close, but I thought it would be a process, and not a snap.

I was just saying this man, didn't just make videos, he made cinematography.

@reelwhore: when i read that he died, i made an instant decision not to watch tv for a few days, except for the movie channels and cartoon network. i knew it would be a ridiculous circus between him and farrah passing on the same day.

@villager: thanks :-) i really, really hope he found some too

@mrs gv: hey girl. i knew it was coming, but like you i thought it would be drawn out. the snap is what makes it so gut wrenching i think.

i'm in a state of shock. i feel numb and i'm seriously going through the motions right now. i've been crying all day at work. hopefully my co-workers don't think i'm crazy. that man changed my life more than i can say and i'm deeply saddened that he's gone.

I didn't pay attention, so I'm just in total shock. It helps to face it head on and grieve through listening to his music and watching his vids and reliving all those moments that are printed in my memory...

I wish him peace...

I remember that show. I was an avid Ed Sullivan fan. It was the only time I got to see (in the 60;s) promenient black artist.

Michael will be missed

@blaqbird: i think a lot of folks probably cried at work, and if they didn't they should have understood those who did.

@marvalus: you know the traffic on youtube and dailymotion must have been hellacious the past couple of days...

@iriegal: it was just a bit before my time, but from what i see from clips is you really, really had to be something to be Black and on that show, it seems

IW,

When any Black entertainers would be scheduled on the Sullivan Show, everybody called up everybody else to make sure we tuned in.

No one had to tell us about the J5 being on Sullivan, for a change we were beating our parents to the television to tune in. There is a generation of Black Baby Boomers who will tell you without shame that we loved us some Jackson5.

Michael was a little kid to me. He was ten and I was fifteen. But there was no doubt that he could deliver a song and lay it out.

Thanks for that Ms. Lady--I can really feel you. I wasn't too much after that when as a kid every single Saturday we watched Soul Train. It was weird, cause whenever I visited the East Coast, they thought the whole of California was whatever they saw on Soul Train. Just hilarious.

Michael will be missed. What a talented man. ..Just hope that his work is what will be greatly appreciated, more than the demise of his personal life.
