Mr. Untouchable

Going to a screener of "Mr. Untouchable" tonight. It is produced by Damon Dash, who has also produced two very, very interesting and different films (in my opinion) "Shadowboxer" which I have discussed on this blog, and "The Woodsman" with Kevin Bacon. "State Property" nonwithstanding.

The story relayed is this:

The true-life story of Harlem's notorious Nicky Barnes, a junkie turned multimillionaire drug-lord.

MR. UNTOUCHABLE takes its audience deep inside the heroin industry of the1970s. The most powerful black drug kingpin in New York City history, Barnes came from humble beginnings to make himself and his comrades rich beyond their wildest dreams, ultimately reaching national infamy in 1977 when the New York Times put him on the front cover of their magazine with the headline "Mr. Untouchable."

Soon after, it all came crumbling down, and Barnes found himself serving a life sentence without parole. Feeling betrayed by his wife and friends while sitting behind bars, Barnes wanted payback, and cooperated with law enforcement by naming names in exchange his freedom under witness protection. With the first hand testimony from "the black Godfather" himself, this documentary tells an epic story of business, excess, greed and revenge.

I.W.: Normally I would be like "Oh brother, here we go again" but the trailer made me curious...I'll let you know what I thought later this week. To view the site, see here: http://www.mruntouchablemovie.com/

I tried about a dozen times to embed the trailer, but couldn't. If you'd like to see it, click this:

based on the trailor it seems kind of interesting. His story in itself is interesting though. I might pick it up once it goes to DVD... Let me know if it's a good choice once you see it.

I've got to see this. So, Nicky Barnes is somewhere in the Cayman Islands 'bout now?
And IW, I'm gonna need for you to publish how much bank Black Hollywood is making. I really thought after that weak reality show Damon Dash did with BET and the chump change and chuckle money Jay threw his way to buy him out was little league. Where's his $$$ coming from?

This film seems to be interesting. Didn't Lee Daniels produce Shadowboxer and The Woodsman? He had lots of publicity when those movies came out. It's interesting that Damon Dash would produce something likes this. I wonder if they were co-producers or something of that sort. Either way, it kind of places Damon Dash in another light from being just a rap music businessman.

Got to see it! Now The Woodsman blew my mind because it touched on the idea of how the Fairytale is warped and places women in the role of victim and men in the role of either violator or savior! If this dude did the Woodsman then I got to check out all his other stuff! Good looking out Sis!

I have seen this film three times alreadyl It is a classic. The sound track is amazing but it is much more than that. It is a universal story of betrayal and power. Barnes is the ultimate American consumer - there is some of him in all of us! The other characters are really compelling too, especially the women - it's nice to see them talk intelligently and not just be objectified. Tell everyone to see this film. I've seen American Gangster too and this is much better.

Must admit, after seeing this, I really, really want to see American Gangster.
