Terrence Watch! Part 13

This really should be a combined TW! and WTF Volume. This story alone almost brought me out of my hiatus. From EW:

Apparently members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences weren’t the only ones impressed by Terrence Howard’s Oscar-nominated role as a pimp-turned-rapper in 2005’s Hustle & Flow. EW has learned exclusively that the 39-year-old Crash veteran, now starring in the Broadway revival of Tennessee Williams’ Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, has landed a record deal with Columbia Records. “The full name [of the project] is Terrence Howard Presents Me and the Band of Kings,” says a label rep, who adds that the group’s as-yet-untitled debut CD “is slated for a fall release.”

From IW: *sigh*

Now, I do remember watching this special on TV One and he is quite the talented guitar/piano player, so I'll be okay with some latin/jazzy type stuff...

But if this brotha tries to float one rhyme outta his mouth, he will forever be deemed...

REJECTED!!!

@Ms. M: Really?! I would have NEVER expected that...now I am super curious. He better do right, cause you seem in the mood to stomp a mofo as of late, lol :-)

@MG: As you can see, I am more than a little sarcastic about Terrence, but I would love to read that article...

@Bygbaby: Not Alexander O.! lol!!!
Yeah, he was the "Slickback Ivanhoe" back in the day.

...one of these days i'll make you laugh by telling you about the interview. lets just say, dude is different.

'dude is different' is an understatement...
IW: what I need is some kind of short bio of Terry, pre-Wood. I'm curious of what kind of childhood ol'boy had to make him so screwy. I'd like to know what makes a celibate (whatever) baby wipe, purse carrying man tick.

@mg: that would be one of the highlights of my year, fo sho'. I agree with coloredgirls, different might be a bit of an understatement...but that's why he has his very own posts on my blog :-)

@coloredgirls--my girlfriend told me he was on Oprah talking about his childhood. His white father was killed when someone tried to rob them on the street, and his father was trying to protect he and his siblings.

Supposedly, they then had to move to the projects where he was teased without mercy for looking different and had sort of a hardscrabble life.

Now that I think about it, that explains a lot, yes?

@IW: Terrence's father wasn't killed, his father KILLED a white man while they were standing in line to see Santa Claus at a department store. Terrence's version of the story on Oprah was that the white man called his father a ni$$a, a fight broke out, and TH's father stabbed the man to death. However, it was latter discovered that Terrence's version of the story may have been a tiny bit fabricated. When a Cleveland newspaper interviewed Terrence's father about the story, he basically said that's not what happened and that Terrence needed a "sob story" (the father's word's) for the Oprah show. He did stab the man to death at the deparment store, but he said there was nothing "racial" about it. Just two grown men acting a fool. But his dad did go to jail for it and they had to leave the suburbs (w/ the white folks) and move to the projects (w/ the black folks). Oprah removed Terrence's story from her website after the dead man's children wrote in and said that Terrence's version of the story was not accurate.

But if you read his interviews, you can tell he experienced some traumatic events during his childhood that have shaped his adulthood.

Thanks for that Nic....

Damn, my friend had that story twisted all to hell, lol. It didn't help that it started out with an untruth to begin with, that's for sure.

@IW: No problem. I was thinking that since Terrence said he was only three years old when it happened, his "version" was probably a mix of lies and hand-me-downs from family members. You know how you have "that story" in your family that has been told and re-told so many times, nobody knows what really happened anymore. What Terrence should have done was kept his mouth shut or told something else. I'll bet he never thought his own father wouldn't back him up or that the victim's family would actually write Oprah a letter. That had to be embarassing for him. Although he has since made a career out of embarassing himself.

@Michael Gonzalez: Does that interview contain certain disparaging comments about Tyler Perry or 'The Brave One'?
