Don't have much to report, but I did see "Soul Men" last night....I don't know if it was the company, or the 2 Chambord martinis, but I actually enjoyed it! (sorry, Sergio). It was like pretty much all of Malcolm Lee's films; I go in braced for the worst, and come out thinking : "That wasn't so bad after all".
Of course, that is not exactly a resounding endorsement, but I am a pretty harsh critic sometimes, so I know a great amount of the readers here will have a lot a fun with it, as they are probably less judgemental. I actually laughed out loud a few times, and Samuel Jackson's yelling wasn't all that loud, or annoying, for once (that in and of itself is worth seeing). It was also good to see that John Legend must have a huge sense of humor, and I'm starting to think Sharon Leal might have a big career in front of her. I expected to see more of Isaac Hayes, but oh well.
I say see it with minimal expectations, and you'll have a good time. Or make it an absolute definite rent.
In response to reader/blogger Paula D.'s funny comment about why folks haven't gone to see this movie:
"Girl......you know that Soul Men is the number 1 bootleg on the streets.....lol!"
I will quote Undercover Black Man:
"Whenever you buy a bootleg DVD, an angel weeps." :^(
will answer your comments from the past couple of days later today folkses.......

I'll check it out once it comes to DVD. It's Oscar season and there are just way too many top-notch films coming out for me to justify paying for a theater priced ticket for Soul Men.
Yeah Bootleggers are killing them right now.
I don't mind bootleg. If the movie is actually good I'll go see it on the silver screen. I won't purchase bootleg, only borrow.
I absolutely refuse to purchase bootleg...I even go so far to refuse to watch a bootleg. We were over at my auntie's house for Thanksgiving last year and somebody had The Great Debaters...I actually got mad!
But I will see Soul Men...gotta see Bernie's last pic...
I have to agree with Sergio. Hated it! I was watching the clock praying for it to be over. I think it was the dranky dranks :)
I chuckled maybe once in the first 20 minutes or so and that was it. I am SO disappointed that this was Mac's last stand and that Samuel L. and Sharon L. lent their talents to this foolishness. So much more could have been done with what was ultimately a good story underneath all the cussing and tomfoolery. I expected to see more of IH too. But you know what, glad I didn't.
And let it be known I am the cusser of all cussers! But the cussing got boring and overly crude to me at times. The side story with her bf was just dumb and seemed tacked on.
My companion loved it so maybe I'm just being a big ole prude....which is highly unlikely. But maybe :)
It's definitely a renter. Even before the script for this feature was written, I thought, renter. LOL. But thanks for sharing your view on it :)
IW
WHAT? YOU LIKED IT???
What is this? A sign of the acopalyse?
@solshine: yes, i completely understand. if i had to pay to go, that movie would have gone unseen!
@clnmike: yeah, i know...folks have it rough so i understand...
@urban thought: buy, borrow--semantics! lol
but i do understand why people do it--there's not a whole lot of money to be had these days...
@ms. m: wow, even i'm not that moral about bootleg! :-) i'm sure hollywood really apreciates folks like you.
@vivrant thing: "I think it was the dranky dranks :)"
maybe-did your companion sneak a flask into his/her large icee? haha
@madame z: trust, if i was paying, i would have been renting.
@sergio: hence the post title "hell has frozen over", lol!
but then again, we have a Black president too, yes? anything can happen :-)
IW - No pblm w/Jaden. He's adorable and has lots of potential. It's more about H-Weird and yet another re-tread. I'm sure J will do a fine job, just tired of all the remakes.
@sgg1844: me too, sis...*sigh*
I saw it and enjoyed it too... I was just going to support and didn't think I was going to like it at all but it was really funny and actually had a storyline
