Daughters Of The Dust

For those of you who don't know, "Daughters of the Dust" is a film chronicling the lives of the Gullah Island decendants. These people were left virtually untouched after being shipped through the middle passage, and as a result, practiced many of the African traditions lost to their Amercan sisters and bothers lost to slavery. They speak a language called "Geechie"

This film is slow, absorbing, and visually beautiful, almost like observing someone else's dream while they're sleeping...

I saw this movie a while ago. It was pretty slow, but I like to watch movies like this to learn about and enjoy the diversity of our people and culture. You can read all day but to get a visual is something else.

It was the only film I've ever seen on these people....even though I am aware there are more, similiar to them in Honduras. I've always wanted to do a film on that...

I have find this film. I am totally confused. I have memories of my aunts teasing my mother, and telling her to stop speaking Geechie, whenever they couldn't understand her. I always thought that the term Geechie referred to someone who was part Haitian and southern. Thank God for the internet now we can finally explore our true heritage as well as others.

The only information I have on this culture is from this movie, and she seems to have really done her research.
