Ever Wonder How Movies Like Soul Plane Get Made?

When I worked at the studio That Will Henceforth Remain Unamed (TWHRU), the Hudlin Brothers wanted to make a film about the Middle Passage. I can bet my life that the conversation went EXACTLY like the one in the video above; anyone who has worked in the Hollywood BS game can relate.

Anyone who has wondered why there aren't more quality black films....well, wonder no more.

That is Hollywood for you! It is no wonder that I tend to watch small independent or foreign films.

Funny, sad, true...those are all emotions that I felt watching this clip. It is a shame, but most TV and movies are headed down this same mindless avenue.

What I wonder is there a way to beat the system, by going independent or starting with doing more animation? When I lived in America I was thinking about approaching people in film school with my ideas (copy written of course) and seeing if that was a way to at least get them made.

I feel the same James and Ole Blue...@ehav ever: Most of us don't have the resources and money for a full blown film and distribution independantly....those that try usually end up straight to DVD.

Animation, I think, is a very, very good way to start out.

I feel nauseas. It's really time for us to erect Black Hollywood sans the sell-outs/stereotype perpetuators.
I don't think I can take anymore of this. I don't watch tv as it is.
I know I'm not the only one.

Definitely not the only one by a long shot.

YUP - this is the very reason i watch very li'l tv, refuse to pay for cable & rarely go to movies. i'm tired of hearing people's complaints about the trash being produced by movie industry - it's as simple as: $TOP Paying to $EE it!!!

even if my "one" li'l voice won't send them to the poor house or stop the madness - at least I keep that much money in my OWN pocket AND that trash out of MY head!

Agreed, Capcity-100%. Can't wait to see how this VH-1 boycott turns out!

I find this funny, because right now, some studio exec is figuring out how to pitch this... maybe they can take it to "Our Stories" Productions?

You know they would make Soul Boat loooong before they would make anything about the Middle Passage; that's why I can't stand their
a--es.

Another thing that crossed my mind. With all the athletes that make millions I wonder why they have never pooled their resources to make action films and cartoons from an African American perspective. Goodness knows that there are a number of them that like video games and cartoons. They also make a pretty steady stream of cash that, I would think could cover a budget. Even if it went to DVD at least its there.

Well, athletes are not really known for being a bowl of brains...even Magic Johnson has serious business managers handling...a lot of these managers are non-black, so there ya go...
