Don't Mean To Be A Debbie Downer But....

I was talking to one of my friends yesterday who told me that they had a bootleg copy of "American Gangster". It was strange, I actually felt my heart drop.

I have never been one to scream anti-piracy or "don't break the law".....I feel most studios make a gang of over-inflated dough, and I am certainly no angel myself. My thing is live and let live, unless there are serious disrespect issues.

Someone even sent me an email (albeit a kinda crazy one) pleading that I blog something about the piracy of American Gangster...I was still unmoved. I know that people can't always afford the movies, can't get a sitter, and if they're like me, really don't like going to the theater (too cold, people flappin' the lips, etc.)

I saw a screener of the movie that someone who worked on the film had, so I got lucky....I really don't know why I want this film to do well, but I do.....I think it's because Denzel is the closest thing we have to a Sidney Poitier in this generation--and he keeps us looking dignified and intelligent at all times.

I don't wanna preach, but if this time you can support this instead of the corner bootleg man...especially since I think it's awfully damned suspicious that a pristine copy was made available....."something in the milk ain't clean" as the kids say.

For more suspicious activity as of late, check out the shenanigans that happened with Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married" here (make sure to scroll down). Unclean milk indeed.

i think with russell crowe AND denzel that it should do fairly well at the box office (which is the only reason russell is prolly in it.) but i agree. i have read the contracts and have seen the ridiculous sums of money hollywood wastes -- remember first look deals? but still...i don't do bootlegs.

I don't do bootlegs either. I usually wait until it's on HBO! Which means I'm always waaaay behind on my movie going. For the first time in years, I saw two movies fresh in the theaters, "Things We Lost In The Fire" and "Why Did I Get Married". I won't be doing that again anytime soon. I don't enjoy goiig to the theater or paying the ridiculous ticket price.

I too want this movie to do well, although instead of having that big time gangsta feel, it feels a lil' hip hop. I'm in no hurry to see it.

My brother called me this weekend and told me HE had a copy of the movie...I refuse to watch it on bootleg...I will go and sit in the theatre and watch Denzel on a movie screen, the way he is supposed to be seen...

I'm with you on this one. I was listening to Yolanda Adams' nationally syndicated morning show and they were talking about how clear-as-day copies of American Gangster have been hitting the barbershops for a month now, while bootlegs of movies like Saw 4 can't be had. Does seem a little suspicious.

I Think people are pointing fingers in the wrong direction. Was it racist when a clear as day copy of starwars came out and was online for download a month before the movie?

no.

The ridiculously pristine copy of shrek 3 folks were bragging about having last summer?

no.

In this time of hitech bootleggers, nothing is impossible to get at early.

whats worse is our fellow Black folk out bootlegging the movie in the shops, directly taking money from denzel and the folks on the flick who worked hard on this..

I dont do movie theatres evah.. Im not a fan of the inflated prices or bootleggs cuz its stealing. I dont care how you justify it.

But when it comes out on DVD, i MIGHT buy it. depending on if there is a message to the film and not just some gangsta/coon shyt.

but thats just me.

i'm not anti-bootlegger at all. to me they can fix bootlegging today if they make movies and cd's more affordable. 9 bucks to see a hour and 30 minute movie that there is a 50/50 chance of it being wack is to high. and your not taking money out of Denzels pocket. he got his up front. alot i might add.

This is a dicey subject, one that I must admit I'm on the fence about...but please see this one on the big screen as it was meant to be seen.

I don't do bootleg --- I agree with you and we do plan to support this movie. I have heard some wonderful thing about it and I agree with you about Mr. D, he's dignified and delicious. I loved him in the Man On Fire remake.

Hello Invisible Woman,

The collateral damage and long-term ramifications of bootlegging movies and books by bootleggers is yet another manifestation of the self-hatred that continues to divide our communities from within.

I also share your suspicions about the source of the pristine copy of American Gangster. I respect Mr. Denzel Washington too much for all he's done to participate in what will eventually destroy any actor's ability to make an honest living.

First, it was prosperity preachers pimpin' Jesus for profit. Now we have Black people bootlegging Black movies for pay. Is this yet another egregious example of "Black on Black" crime? Nothing justifies what we, as Americans, keep doing to ourselves.

The rest of the world is laughing at America right now because we're acting like we don't respect anything or anybody except Dollar Bills that are rapidly declining in value in the eyes of emerging global economist.

I liked him in Man On Fire too, but it took me a minute to warm up to the story...@manchild: your last sentence is sooo very, very on point, and it's sad. It really put me in a refective mood...and made me even more resolved to have respect, morals, compassion and lots of love around.
